The Empire of Eunuchs: How the Republican Party Betrayed America
By Richard M. Moss
GGV Publishing Company, LLC, $21.00, 539 pages, Format: Trade

Amid a contentious sociopolitical climate, conservatives are presented with urgent opportunities to critically examine policies and political strategies that undermine American principles. In The Empire of Eunuchs: How the Republican Party Betrayed America, Indiana-based Dr. Richard Moss offers a provocative call to action for Republicans to change the trajectory of ineffective and weak governance. He urges conservatives to unabashedly stand by their principles, vision, and direction to uphold traditional Christian values. Moss suggests that some Republicans prioritize corporate interests over national well-being and have been complicit or inactive in addressing key issues.

Throughout the book, Moss provides detailed examples to support his claims that Republicans have compromised their beliefs, prioritized personal gain and failed to effectively counter the liberal agenda, leading to a perception of the party as ineffective and lacking in purpose. Moss saves his most punishing critique for Democrats, accusing them of exploiting racial issues for political gain, perpetuating a victimhood narrative, promoting leftist, socialist, and authoritarian ideologies, and imposing what the author perceives as socialist, tyrannical, and radical ideologies. Specific Democratic figures like Barack Obama, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib are painted as privileged, anti-Semitic, and hypocritical individuals. For both parties, he critiques government spending, unsustainable entitlements, and the need for a balanced budget.

I identify as a progressive voter, but I am hardly the target audience for The Empire of Eunuchs. I found Moss’ take on various issues informative but unsurprising. The book is suitable for Americans with conservative viewpoints on various societal and political issues, such as race, immigration, law and order, and fiscal and foreign policies. Moss makes no gestures to work across the proverbial aisle and primarily speaks to conservative politicians, policymakers, and Republican Party members. Anyone interested in engaging with critical analyses, alternative viewpoints, and calls for reform from a conservative perspective would welcome Moss’ tirades against what he calls the weak, cowardly, and inept elements of the GOP. His tone and style are characterized by a highly critical, disparaging, and confrontational approach toward progressive and leftist ideologies. At times, Moss uses inflammatory language, derogatory terms, and hyperbolic language to discredit leftist ideologies and individuals associated with them. Moss does not hide his biases and lack of nuance or objectivity.

As the United States approaches a historic presidential election, there is an opportunity for polarized parties to take note of the discontent expressed by opposing viewpoints. Dr. Moss may be unsuccessful in changing minds. Still, he does make a valiant effort to provide a detailed historical perspective on the origins and evolution of progressive, leftist, and conservative ideologies. In a critical narrative of the Republican Party's perceived shortcomings and failures, Moss blends historical analysis with contemporary political commentary. His combative and confrontational style echoes the vitriolic frustrations that come across as vile and hateful.
